I'm back from Bali. It was a trip I was really looking forward to because I felt that I really needed time away from everyone and everything in my life.
So I spent four days relishing utter boredom at a resort. I'd wake up, do about an hour of work, go for lunch, chase that with three cocktails (or a cup of tea) at the bar, work on a tan by the beach, have dinner, go back to the bar, watch an evening show, and retire with MTV. I signed out twice -- once for a two-hour massage, and another time to have lunch on my own at another beach about 15 minutes away. The green ocean roaring by my side, and planes taking off in the distance.
There are holidays, and there are business trips, and then there are 'escapes'. For the past four days I didn't reply text messages unless I had to. I didn't use my wallet much at all since I spent all my time in the resort. I didn't worry about calling or visiting my mum. My main concern was building an even tan. (Mission failed -- I currently look like a burns victim.) I spent a lot of time at the bar, alternately staring into space, and thinking about the friends whom I'd love to have there with me, thereby celebrating our friendships. I met one wonderful 21-year-old who's reminded me what it's like to be young, to want to chase dreams, to choose happiness.
Now that I'm back I'm grumpy again. I feel like there's too many people around. I have to start worrying about my next meal, or when I'm running my next load of laundry. And then work. Family obligations. Plans for next weekend. It's all a bit much. So I'm thankful I had Bali at all. Really. I'm going to hang on to those happy peaceful moments for as long as I can. Until it all gets swept away, or maybe until my next great escape.
