Maybe I'm spending too much time with MMDL. Over the past week we've toasted to getting out of this country one too many times. And now it's starting to weigh heavily on my mind. Not the prospect of making a new start elsewhere, but the reasons why I'm so desperate to take flight. So many things about this damned country irritate the crap out of me. The way I wait 25 minutes on average for the bus every day while at least two of every other service go by. The way people don't give way on crowded buses and trains; it's so disheartening to see that they don't even have the intention to be courteous. I'm all for letting people go ahead of me, but it'd be nice to at least see that they shared the same sentiment. But no, they want to get ahead and they will get ahead. Everybody else around them ceases to exist in their valiant attempt.
I don't like how sometimes I go out with certain people and all they can talk about are their fast-paced lives and their ambitions to make money. Or even worse, their extravagant spending habits. These subjects bore me. I find such conversation trivial and uninspiring. I dislike being asked about how much I earn, or anything remotely related to money matters. I think it's plain bad etiquette. I don't like how jobs take over lives, and suddenly it becomes the controlling motif , the centre of mundane chit-chat, the standard by which we measure our lives.
It's going to be a miracle if two or three years down the road, I haven't changed. If I haven't become a humourless sell-out who's so sucked in that she's given up her dream of leaving this all behind. And I know this sounds so incredibly elitist and mean, but it's going to be a grand day when I kiss goodbye to the feckin' retards who populate this place.
