It's amazing how we know the same people differently. Someone might think I'm friendly, someone might think otherwise. It all depends on which side of me the world sees at that particular moment, or maybe it depends on the individual who perceives. I am like this by that person's standard, and like that by another's. The things we know one another by, Virginia Woolf once said. I don't think we stop long enough to consider the depth of that statement. The world has become too reductive. But it is only human. To quantify, to come to conclusions, to extrapolate; our efforts to seek truth and create reasons only spring from a deep desire to understand the things that happen. Weak indeed is our human grasp.
Anyhow, I met up with an old friend today who has just returned from a trip to Melbourne to visit a mutual buddy. We spoke briefly about what lies ahead after graduation (in a short year!). Turns out they've been talking about me and they have faith in what I plan to do. Thank God. Because I don't have that much faith in myself, but I'll settle for vicarious positivity. It feels good though, to know that there are people who don't think I'm headed towards complete self-destruction out of a stubbornness to conform. Newsflash! I should probably learn to respect my own decisions more.

Today was hilarious. I went out with two girlfriends who have no dignity and plenty of greed to make up for it. We went to Morton's to try their famous martinis, but really we were there for the supposedly fantastic and more importantly, complimentary steak sandwiches that arrive every 15-25 minutes. That meant eight steak sandwiches each in two hours, and all we had to do was pay $7.50 for the drink.
To cut the long and boring story short, we only had one batch in the first hour, but that one batch confirmed (and affirmed) what the hype was all about. We got really crabby because they made us wait 40 minutes for the first batch, and another 40 for the second. It got so bad that by the time we did see the waiter carrying the tray of sandwiches hither, we got too distracted to keep up the conversation so we just kept quiet.
So 5pm we sit down. They serve us at 5.40pm and again at 6.30pm. With the end of happy hour looming on the horizon, we started to get even crabbier because one of us had had
four sandwiches in
one hour the last time she was here. Finally at 6.50pm we get our third batch. We call for the bill just after 7, and just as we've counted out the money we spy more steak sandwiches coming our way. The fourth batch! Out of desperation, one of us (NOT me) grabs the money, shoves it behind her and leans back in her chair so that the waiter will stop by our table once more. The other congratulates herself on not being able to finish her martini and thereby legitimise our presence with a half-full glass, the other glasses having been long since cleared away.
The
things people do. The levels people lower themselves to. But I dig it. I dig that kind of honesty and unpretentiousness. I really had a great time this evening even though we didn't say much to each other, save for the alternating drone of 'where are the damn sandwiches, I want the damn sandwiches, GIMME THE DAMN SANDWICHES' which really warranted no reply from anyone. So the appletini has given me a headache and I have fulfilled my raw meat quota for the week. But it's all worth it.

Top: They enjoy the Godiva chocolate liquer, which sadly has me won over as well.
Middle: Starting point: 5pm.
Bottom: A little red, and more than a little annoyed (see above).
