I really need help you guys, what does 'film topic that interests you' mean? Do they want me to tell them whether I like horror or action or comedy [as in genre]? Or are they looking for an answer like 'Sex is a topic that goes down well with me'? I'm really confused here!

Today I watched Final Destination 2, and it's disgustingly gory. But it held my attention throughout, so it wasn't insufferably long or boring. Everyone with the exception of Hannah should go check it out if you're into 1. gorgeous grunge types or 2. blood and carnage. On Monday I will be going for a low impact aerobics class, and hopefully over the next month [during which I will be going for classes and gym sessions] I will lose some weight and acquire muscles in places which were previously denser than pig fat. And I hope that when this sweating and grunting is done with, I will have a waist. Keep the prayers rolling in, because you all know I can't exercise to save my life. Till then I remain forever yours, A Fattie.

We are currently considering your application for admission to the degree of Film with Television. To assist us with this, we should like to read a short essay by you on a film topic that interests you. We are looking for the ability to analyse and interpret movies; a copy of A level work you have already done could be suitable. The essay should not be more than 1,500 words long, and should reach me by 26 February 2003.

Shit! What do I do now?

"Stupidity is really important - to have this blind confidence based on absolutely nothing about yourself at all. You merely say 'I'm gonna go through life like a bull in a china shop,' and you keep getting better at being a bull in a china shop. You just do it. That's what it's all about - just doing it and not thinking too hard about it." - Brett

"You can either say, 'Well, the world around me is blank, so I'll just give into the logic of it all - y'know, theoretically life is blank so let it be blank' - which is what everyone seems to be doing, just giving in. Or you can take a gigantic leap of faith and say, 'I don't believe that, I believe life can be fascinating, extraordinary and absurd.' And, if you take that leap of faith and believe it, you can change your life. You shouldn't be scared to do it. Take the risk. That's what we're doing in a way, taking that risk." - Mat

Brett: My advice to the Melody Maker readers is this: don't do it [drugs]. No.
Interviewer: Our readers' mums are going to love you, Brett.
Brett: Yes, they'll be going 'that Brett Anderson's such a nice young man after all. You can tell whether he's a boy or a girl and you can hear all the lyrics. It's got a good beat'.
